I've got 10.4.4 and am up to date with Software Update. The Rotate option appears in my Display prefs with none of the option-clicking jiggery-pokery you talk about <a HREF="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gilesbooth/97657473/" rel="nofollow">here</A>. I wonder if the preference pane varies depending on what display you've got connected? Mines an old Packard-Bell crt.
