CAPTAIN JIM STAR is, at least in theory, Captain of the Starship Boiling Hell. He is condemned to wander the Universe barely in charge of his ship, certainly not in charge of his crew, and forever waiting orders from Mission Control. The postman brings the Captain a daily dose of disappointment in his mail bag. Star is arrogant, vain and yet paranoid. His relationship (at least in the printed cartoon strip) with Officer Scarlette is submissive, and on occasion explicitly so. His masochism is apparent in the following exchange: ('Limbs' Jones has revealed to Scarlette that he believes Jim Star invented the universe...)
SCARLETTE: If you invented the universe, Star, how come you made it so bad for yourself?
