These
are all mostly web-related, but here are some applications
I wouldn't be without...
USB
Overdrive is a neat $20 piece of shareware that allows
you to do all manner of crazy and useful things with USB joysticks,
gamepads mice and so on, regardless of whether you have the
right drivers or whether applications support them. For example,
the Gravis explicitly say their Gamepad Pro will not work
with Nanosaur (which doesn't support InputSprockets) - well
with USB Overdrive 1.2 it does. Also, the game BattleGirl
does support InputSprocket, but won't work with gamepads -
well it does now! You can configure devices on an application-by-application
basis, or globally - for example my global settings use the
gamepad for scrolling windows. Download from www.usboverdrive.com
BBEDit
Lite is a great Notepad-style text editor, great for hand-encoding
web pages. I used to use it all the time before I discovered
Dreamweaver and indeed it integrates with Dreamweaver if you
feel the need to dive in to the HTML for a spot of grepping.
Free from BareBones at http://web.barebones.com/free/free.html
Anarchie
Pro FTP software that is very easy to use, just drag and
drop. You're also supposed to be able to edit your web pages
remotely in BBEdit but I have't been able to get that to work
yet. Still, it's VERY good FTP software and you can download
it for free from www.stairways.com.
In case you're worried about missing the scampering dog of
Fetch (another fine FTP client), Anarchie gives you a hopping
kangaroo instead.
GIFBuilder
lets you make those annoying animated GIFs, and it's so easy
to use it's almost embarassing. Free from http://iawww.epfl.ch/Staff/Yves.Piguet/clip2gif-home/GifBuilder.html
- which could well be the world's most inelegant URL.
JPEGView
is a handly little program for viewing all kinds of image
files either individually or in slideshows. Its online help
files contain an excellent discussion on the relative merits
of JPEG and GIF image filetypes. Postcardware - I'll try and
find a URL for it soon. Unless there's a new version, however,
it's getting a bit long in the tooth, as it does not support
progressive JPEGs and slideshows glitch in OS8.5 and later.
